TPE Materials in Gas Masks: Advantages and Applications

The emergence of chemical weapons gave birth to gas masks, which were initially a kind of protective equipment to protect personal respiratory tracts against toxic gases. Nowadays, the material of gas masks has evolved from the original ordinary PVC rubber to silicone rubber and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE).
There are various styles and designs of gas mask covers on the market, and most of their structures are composed of hard plastic and soft rubber materials. Hard plastic generally refers to thermosetting plastic, which is usually processed by hot pressing and cannot be reprocessed after molding. Generally speaking, hard plastic is a kind of raw plastic with a hard feel but not very durable. In gas mask covers, hard plastic is used to support the mask cover, so that air can circulate effectively. Soft rubber materials are formed by plastic injection molding and have a relatively soft feel at room temperature. It is precisely because of the softness of soft rubber materials that people will feel a certain degree of comfort when wearing gas mask covers in contact with the human body. With the birth of TPE materials, two types of materials are used in the production of gas mask covers: one is silicone, and the other is environmentally friendly and non-toxic TPE/TPR soft rubber materials.
The main factors for choosing TPE materials as gas mask covers are as follows:
1. Environmental protection, non-toxicity, and safety - TPE not only has the high elasticity, high strength, and high resilience of rubber; - It also has some characteristics of injection molding processing. It is not only environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and safe, but also has a very wide range of hardness; - It has excellent colorability, relatively soft touch, and excellent weather resistance, fatigue resistance, and temperature resistance.
2. Soft touch - TPE materials can provide materials with appropriate hardness, and they can find a balanced point between the comfort of contact with the face and the strength of the material. - Nowadays, gas mask covers are made of soft rubber and TPE materials, both of which have good low-temperature resistance.
3. Integral molding - TPE materials can be directly bonded with PP mask covers through injection coating to form an integral part, and no adhesives or other bonding products are needed for assembly. - TPE materials are suitable for mid-range gas mask covers and can be 100% recycled and reused.
